The Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš officially opened the new building of the Center for Cardiovascular and Transplantation Surgery in Brno on Tuesday. This modern facility, located within the Faculty Hospital of Brno, is one of the largest investments in Czech healthcare in recent years and aims to significantly expand treatment options for patients with serious heart conditions, as well as those who need transplants.
In addition to the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Alena Schillerová, and the Minister of Health, Adam Vojtěch, also attended the opening ceremony.
The total cost of the new complex exceeded 3.46 billion crowns. More than three billion crowns came from public sources, including funds from the National Recovery Plan. The center offers 125 beds, five operating rooms, including a modern hybrid room, and extensive equipment.
"Investments in healthcare are an absolute priority for our government, and I have personally been dedicated to healthcare for a long time. In our previous government, I managed to negotiate 55 billion crowns for Czech healthcare in Europe, and I am pleased that these funds could now be used to finance the construction of the new Center for Cardiovascular and Transplantation Surgery at the Brno University Hospital. We have excellent doctors who are among the world's leading experts, and they need modern equipment and the best devices," said Prime Minister Andrej Babiš.
The new facility is designed to increase capacity, expand the range of specialized procedures, and reduce waiting times for complex surgeries and transplants. It also creates space for further development of cardiovascular surgery, cardiology, and transplantation medicine in the Czech Republic.
During the opening ceremony, Andrej Babiš also emphasized the importance of prevention and regular check-ups.
"Prevention is key for us. We want to motivate citizens to undergo preventive examinations early, especially focusing on the younger generation. We must do everything we can to ensure that our fellow citizens are healthy, live long lives, and enjoy a good quality of life," said Andrej Babiš.
The Center for Cardiovascular and Transplantation Surgery in Brno is already one of the most important specialized healthcare facilities in the Czech Republic. It is the largest transplant center in Moravia and also one of the largest cardiovascular surgery centers in the country.
During 2025 alone, doctors at the center performed 1062 heart surgeries, nearly 300 structural interventions on heart valves, and a total of 126 heart, kidney, and liver transplants.
The opening of the new complex will further strengthen the possibilities for top-level cardiovascular and transplant care in the Czech Republic and provide more modern conditions for both patients and doctors and healthcare professionals.
