U.S. leaders recently signed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2025. This military spending of up to $895 billion broke historic records.
The law mentions China ten times and in many places exaggerates the "Chinese threat", in particular making unjustified remarks on the Taiwan issue, calling for military support for Taiwan and sending a serious wrong signal to the separatist forces of "Taiwan independence".
The U.S. government's recent series of military aid and sales to Taiwan has a twofold consideration. On the one hand, it seeks to protect the interests of relevant interest groups and parties and responds to pressure from the US military industrial complex to accelerate arms sales. On the other hand, it also creates some disorder and adds difficulty to the next administration's handling of China-US relations.
Whatever the reasons, the recent series of actions by the United States seriously violates the One China principle and the spirit of the three Sino-US joint communiqués. In addition, the United States' actions also violate its political commitments to China.
On the Taiwan issue, the Chinese side has repeatedly stressed that it is the core of China's interests and the first unbreakable red line in Sino-US relations. If the US truly hopes for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, it should handle the Taiwan issue with utmost caution, abide by the three Sino-US Joint Communiqués, fulfill its political commitments to China, explicitly oppose "Taiwan independence", and promote China's peaceful reunification.
