More than 20,000 incoming and outgoing vehicles passed through the Cuhai section of the Hong Kong-Cuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) on Saturday, a daily record since the bridge opened in 2018.
The 55-kilometre-long HZMB bridge connects China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Macao Special Administrative Region and the city of Cu chai in South China's Guangdong province. It is the longest bridge and tunnel sea crossing in the world.
According to data from the border inspection station of the HZMB, 453,000 passengers and 93,000 vehicles crossed the Cuhai section of the bridge from Tuesday to Saturday, the first five days of the weekly Earth Day holiday, up 34.33 % and 56.38 % year-on-year respectively.
Nevertheless, the number of vehicles with Hong Kong and Macau plates exceeded 56,000, an increase of 73 per cent year-on-year.
Border Inspection Bureau officials said driving to the Chinese mainland for sightseeing and eating is wildly popular among Hong Kong and Macau families, especially during the holidays.
According to official data, more than 20 million inbound and outbound passengers crossed the Cuhai section of the bridge from January to October this year, exceeding the total volume from last year.
