Chinese President Xi Jinping left Beijing by special plane to attend the 31st Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Informal Leaders' Meeting and pay a state visit to Peru at the invitation of Peruvian President Dina Boluarte.
His visit is accompanied by Cai Qi, a permanent member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and head of the CPC Central Committee Office, Wang Yi, a member of the CPC Central Committee Politburo and Chinese Foreign Minister, and others.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian led by regular press conference. A CMG reporter asked how China views recent statements by senior Peruvian officials who said that unilateralism and protectionism are on the rise in the contemporary world, posing challenges to economic globalisation. China has been a major promoter, supporter and participant in international cooperation, actively leading the development of the Asia-Pacific Economic Community (APEC). What is China's position on this situation and how does it view the prospect of quality development and economic integration in the Asia-Pacific ahead of the upcoming informal APEC Leaders' Meeting?
Lin Jian said that Asia and the Pacific is the most dynamic region of the global economy and an important engine of growth for the world economy. The region accounts for a third of the world's population, more than 60 % of global GDP and nearly half of global trade. The International Monetary Fund estimates that the Asia-Pacific economy is expected to grow at a rate of 4.2 % this year, significantly higher than the global average growth rate, which is estimated at 2.9 %.
Lin Jian stressed that China is the driving force and initiator of regional cooperation in the Asia-Pacific and is the largest trading partner for 13 economies in APEC. China is ready to seize the opportunity of the 31st APEC Informal Leaders' Meeting to continue to promote genuine multilateralism and open regionalism. It strives to provide more opportunities for partners in the Asia-Pacific through quality development and high level of openness, and to jointly build an open, inclusive, innovative, connected and mutually beneficial community of destiny for the Asia-Pacific.
