Overview of the latest economic events in the Czech Republic
The Prague Stock Exchange weakened after the growth at the beginning of the week. The PX index dropped 1.72 percent to 2,674.17 points, with the main reason being a sell-off in banking titles and lower investor activity in the financial sector. The biggest pressure was seen in bank issues, which have long formed a key part of the index.
According to the latest economic surveys published by the Czech Statistical Office, overall confidence in the economy increased by 0.9 points month-on-month to 101.1.
At the same time, the domestic business environment remains affected by the European investment cycle and technological transformation. Czech companies linked to export chains are particularly watching developments in the semiconductor industry and digital services, where demand for AI solutions is expected to grow further.
Foreign investment
Global investment activity picked up significantly and included several significant acquisitions and strategic transactions with an impact on European markets. US media conglomerate Warner Bros. Discovery announced that it is considering a new takeover bid from the group Paramount Skydance, which, according to Bloomberg, could exceed the previous valuation of 108.4 billion dollars. This is one of the largest media transactions in recent years.
Significant technology agreement concluded by the companies Advanced Micro Devices a Meta Platforms, according to which AMD will deliver up to $60 billion worth of AI chips over five years. Meta also received an option to take up to a 10 percent stake in AMD, confirming the growing importance of strategic partnerships in AI infrastructure.
German industrial group INDUS Holding AG through its subsidiary MBRAUN will buy an Italian company Amira S.r.l., to strengthen its sterile manufacturing environment technology and expand its presence in Southern Europe.
Consulting giant Accenture also acquired Verum Partners to boost AI projects in Latin America, while the tech firm Climb Global Solutions completed the acquisition of the interworks.cloud platform for $9.4 million and expanded its distribution network in Europe.
In Central and Eastern Europe, the Romanian company announced Norofert the acquisition of 60% stake in Expert Agribusiness, confirming the continued consolidation of the region's agricultural and biotechnology sector.
Corporate transactions are also taking place in the media sector - Finnish company Sanoma Corporation implemented a buyback of its own shares as part of its broader capital strategy and support for shareholder value.
Significant events outside the Czech Republic with global impact
Energy and geopolitical factors continue to shape the global economy. According to a report by the independent Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), while Russian oil exports are down year-on-year in 2025, they are up around six per cent compared to the period before the invasion of Ukraine, despite Western sanctions aimed at curbing the so-called shadow fleet.
Energy markets thus remain more stable than originally expected, which has a direct impact on inflation and industrial costs in Europe, including the Czech Republic.
At the same time, the wave of global mergers continues, particularly in the pharmaceutical sector. Among the largest transactions of recent days is the acquisition of Avidity Biosciences by Novartis, offer Pfizer to take over the Metsery and the deal Gilead Sciences to buy Arcellx for up to $7.8 billion. Analysts expect that 2026 could be the strongest period for biotech acquisitions in a decade.
