Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogačar became world champion in the mass start race. He was the third rider to win the Giro d'Italia, the Tour de France and the World Championships in the same year - doing what Belgian Eddy Merckx (1974) and Irishman Stephen Roche (1987) did. So the question may be: what's more? Belgian cyclist Remco Evenepoel, after winning the time trial and road race at the Paris Olympics, also won the time trial at the World Championships in Zurich. The star Belgian became the first rider to achieve a winning double under five rings.
The silver medal was won by Australian Ben O'Connor, the bronze went to the defending champion Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands. Czech representative Mathias Vacek took 20th place. The twenty-two-year-old rider of the elite Lidl-Trek stable controlled the situation, but in the last kilometres he was running out of strength. He lost almost four minutes to Pogačar.
Elite Men (273.9 km): 1. Pogačar (Slovenia) 6:27:30, 2. O'Connor (AUS) -34, 3. Van der Poel (NL), 4. Skujins (LAT), 5. Evenepoel (BEL), 6. Hirschi (SW) all -58, 7. Healy (IR) -1:00, 8. Mas (ESP) -1:01, 9. Simmons (USA), 10. Bardet (FR) both -2:18, ...20. M. Vacek -3:52, Boroš, Otruba, Schlegel (all Czech Republic) did not finish.

The death in the junior women's race is the blemish on the world championships. Eighteen-year-old Swiss cyclist Muriel Furrer died Friday from a crash in Thursday's junior women's road race at her home world championships in Zurich. She was in critical condition after a collision and serious head injuries. Her death was reported by International Cycling Union (UCI).
Furrer was involved in a collision during the race in heavy rain, suffering a severe head injury, and was transported to hospital by rescue helicopter. The UCI had already described her condition as "very critical" on Thursday.
"The international cycling community has lost a rider who had a bright future ahead of her," said the UCI. Earlier in the day, the union announced that despite the seriousness of the situation, it expects the championship to continue as originally scheduled. "In accordance with the wishes of Muriel Furrer's family, the World Championships will go ahead as planned," She announced.
