Chinese athletes continued to assert their dominance at the Asian Winter Games in Harbin, Heilongjiang province, on Wednesday.
The host country started the day by winning gold in cross-country skiing and the women's team won the 4×5km relay in Yabuli. The team of Li Lei, Chi Chunxue, Chen Lingshuang and Dinigeer Yilamujiang showed exceptional teamwork and skill in their triumph.
Li, the previous women's classic sprint champion, started strong and quickly took the lead in the relay. By the end of the second leg, Chi had increased her lead to a respectable 47 seconds. Chen increased their lead to one minute before handing over to Dinigeer, who finished the race in a total time of 53 minutes and 59.3 seconds, leaving Kazakhstan in second and Japan in third.
The men's team also performed well in the 4×7.5 km relay. Although the Chinese team of Li Minglin, Cirenzhandui, Bao Lin and Wang Qiang were more than 30 seconds behind at one point, they managed a thrilling comeback and won gold, beating Japan by just 3.2 seconds. Kazakhstan settled for bronze.
China's winning streak continued in the women's freestyle big air final, where Liu Mengting, Han Linshan and Yang Ruyi took the podium. Liu scored 175.50 points to win her second individual gold medal at this competition. Just a day earlier, the same trio dominated the women's slopestyle final, with Liu again taking first place.
In ski mountaineering, a newly introduced discipline at the continental competition, China excelled in the mixed relay. The duo of Cidan Yuzhen and Buluer won gold, Yu Jingxuan and Bi Yuxin silver and Liu Jianbin and Suolang Quzhen bronze. Thanks to their performances, the host country won a total of three gold, three silver and three bronze medals in this event.
The debut sport is not only new to the Asian Winter Games, but will also make its debut at next year's Winter Olympics, signalling a bright future for the discipline.
