BOGOTA, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- At least 18 people were killed and dozens of others injured in Friday's powerful landslide in northwest Colombia, local media reported. The landslide occurred on a road between Quibd, capital of Choco department, and Medellin, capital of Antioquia department, stranding dozens of people and vehicles in the area, Colombian Vice President Francia Marquez said on X network (formerly Twitter), citing preliminary reports.
"Eighteen people have been identified as dead," said Jaime Herrera, mayor of the municipality of Carmen de Atrato in Choco department. According to news website La Prensa Latina, the death toll may rise as rescue and relief operations continue.
At least 35 injured were taken to various hospitals, the National Disaster Risk Management Unit said in a statement.
