Slavia, through the "Donate Strength" campaign under the patronage of the Mayor of Prague, is drawing attention to the need for new regular blood donors. That's why the A-team wore a special set of white jerseys in the home league game against Dukla to draw attention to the issue of blood shortage and the lack of new regular donors. Even so, the "unsewn" won 3:0.
"White is honor, red is blood," so says the founding statutes of SK Slavia Prague. Since 1892, we have been a community that honours the red, white and has been helping those in need since its inception.
1892 - establishment of the club. 1896 - first game in the red and white jerseys. Unchanged since then. 27 October 2024that is, after more than 128 years, the red of the leotard voluntarily disappeared for the first time.
Except for the traditional star on the heart, the red colour has completely left the Slavic jerseys used during home matches. Why? The missing colour of blood drew the players' attention to the problem of lack of donated blood in Czech hospitals and new regular donors. All this with the idea: Donate blood! Give the power of Slavia! Save lives!
Five minutes at a blood draw can save up to three lives. Without transfusion, modern medicine is impossible. Blood can't be made, it can't be replaced. And the need for new regular donors continues to resonate.
"A long-term problem in the Czech Republic is that the number of blood donors is not such that the need for transfusion products can be met without problems. It is not that there is not enough blood for those who need it. But there are a number of situations where donors are harder to come by and blood is difficult to find," explains the President of the Czech Red Cross Marek Jukl.
On 27 September, the opening day of the Donate the Power of Slavia event, the A-team wore a special set of white jerseys in a home league match against Dukla to draw attention to the issue of blood shortages and the lack of new regular donors.
What is the current status?
In the Czech Republic, 400 - 450 thousand whole blood donations are performed each year. The donor base of regular donors is 220 thousand donors, but the need for hospital facilities is 300 thousand.
Moreover, the register is ageing. Every year, 30,000 donors disappear from it for age or health reasons, and the number of new donors is slightly smaller. Therefore, it is very important to find new donors!
"Donors are declining due to age, the fact that they can no longer donate blood, or the onset of a chronic disease that causes them to be disqualified from donating. So we would need, I'm not afraid to say, 100 to 150 thousand donors to be included in the new register in the Czech Republic." says the head of the transfusion department at the VFN Daniela Dušková.
The importance of blood, the importance of donation, is enormous. It always will be!
"It is essential that people realize that blood is needed and without it, contemporary medicine cannot be," appeals the chairman of the transfusion department of the Thomayer University Hospital Petr Turek.
"My colleagues and I welcomed the fact that Slavia Sports Club joined our blood donors in launching a campaign to support blood donation in Prague, Czech Republic. We believe that many fans who support Slavia will emulate them and come to donate blood repeatedly," concludesDušková.
