More than 190 generative artificial intelligence (AI) service models have been registered with the regulatory authority in China and made available for public use, Zhuang Rongwen (Chuang Zhong-wen), head of the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), said on Monday.
The number of registered users of these models has exceeded 600 million, Zhuang added, highlighting the favorable and orderly development of related technologies and applications.
He pledged that the government will take an active role in promoting industrial development, technological advancement and progress in security control in this key area, giving priority to coordinating quality development and high level security.
China issued a set of provisional rules for the management of AI generative services in July 2023, the first of its kind in the world.
A key reform resolution adopted at the Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in July also stated that the country will improve mechanisms for the development and management of generative artificial intelligence.
In terms of policy priorities going forward, Zhuang noted that the focus will be on independent research and development of computer chips and algorithmic frameworks and the development of high-quality Chinese language corpora, with more resources going to building core AI research capabilities and the application of proprietary large-scale models.
