More than half of the Czechs (55 %) plan to spend their spring holidays in the Czech Republic, with the most frequent choices being South Bohemia (19 %) and South Moravia (12 %). They will then stay in their destination for an average of six days. A total of 47 % respondents will enjoy their holidays during long weekends. The main purpose of their time off is to relax with lighter sports activities, relaxation and visiting cultural sights. 46 % Czechs will go abroad this spring. On average, people are planning to spend CZK 7358 per person for their spring holidays. This is based on of the current survey Czech Tourism Centre - CzechTourism.
Shorter holidays, more emphasis on quality and comfort
The share of those who want to enjoy the spring holiday season in the Czech Republic is almost unchanged compared to last year. The average length of stay remains six days, with almost half of people (47 %) preferring long weekends. It is still true that Czechs most often spend spring holiday with your family or spouse. In general, shorter stays seem to be gaining in popularity, with people willing to invest more in quality accommodation and service.
"Czechs are placing more and more emphasis on comfort and unique experiences. They prefer a combination of active rest and relaxation with elements of local gastronomy and culture. For example, wine trails, beer routes or themed gastronomic festivals are growing in popularity," says the director of the Czech Tourism Centre - CzechTourism Frantisek Reismüller and adds: "These preferences are in line with the concept of our campaigns this year, in which we focus on active relaxation, spas, but also gastronomy. This is also based on the fact that the Czech Republic is currently running a three-year cooperation with Michelin. Thanks to this partnership, the Czech Republic will be among the countries that the renowned company has long supported as culinary destinations."
The trend is to relax with lighter sports activities, relaxation and culture
Almost a third of the respondents want to spend their spring holidays actively. Less than a fifth of respondents prefer passive relaxation and 17 % people are heading for cultural sightseeing. Hiking (64 %) and leisurely walks (53 %) are the most popular activities on spring holidays. Cycling with the family (22 %) or water sports (15 %) are among the favourite activities on spring holidays. Almost half of the respondents are inspired by tips and recommendations from friends and family (46 %) and 37 % of the respondents choose a destination by using a map with tourist attractions marked on it.
"Hiking is one of the most popular outdoor activities that Czechs actively engage in. It is not surprising that they want to spend their holidays in this way. We have the best hiking signs in the world. There are over 44,000 km of hiking trails and 40,000 km of road cycling routes, among others, waiting for travellers to and around the Czech Republic. The trend in recent years has also been to link active holidays more closely with exploring regional culture and gastronomy. At the same time, there is also a growing interest in spa stays and wellness holidays," adds the Director of the Management and B2B Cooperation Department of CzechTourism Tereza Hofmanová.
Czechs will pay more for spring holidays this year, they want to stay mainly in guesthouses
Planned spending per person during spring break increased year-on-year by CZK 545. Almost half of the total amount will be spent on accommodation. In this respect, Czechs prefer guesthouses (51 %), higher category hotels (27 %) and unpaid overnight stays in private with friends or family (19 %). When choosing a stay during spring break in the Czech Republic, the most important factors for respondents are price, personal experience, information on the web or the range and quality of services.
Another important item of holiday expenditure is meals in restaurants (18 %) and expenditure on services such as tickets, culture, museums or sightseeing (13 %).
Almost a third of respondents will visit the same or a familiar place in the spring and nearly half will visit a destination they have never been to before. They are most likely to drive or motorbike to the destination (67 %), with a fifth going by train. The younger generation, aged 18-34, is the most likely to use public transport.
"An interesting finding is that even in today's technological era, visitors prefer a live guide when visiting tourist sites. Less than a fifth of them prefer an audio guide. On the other hand, it is not surprising that the older generation over 75 years of age is particularly keen on face-to-face interpretation, while mobile apps or audio guides are most popular among people aged 40-49," summarises the head of the Institute of Tourism Petr Janeček.
More Czechs will go abroad this spring than last year
46 % of Czechs are planning a spring holiday abroad, which represents a year-on-year increase of 4 p.p. Younger people aged 30-39 are mainly going abroad (61 %). In the case of those who are not going abroad, the most common reason is that they simply do not go abroad at this time of year (48 %), as well as lack of finances (43 %).
