Castles, chateaus, churches, museums and technical uniqueness. In the Czech Republic, cultural monuments have long been one of the main reasons why people travel domestically. In 2024, they were visited by 47 % foreigners and 38 % domestic travellers. Traditionally, the biggest interest is in Prague. However, other regions are increasingly coming into the visitor spotlight and tourists are heading to places that were previously off the radar. Among foreign visitors, sights in the Czech Republic are most often sought by travellers from more distant countries, while tourists from neighbouring countries combine a visit to our country with active relaxation.
Castles and chateaus as a heart's delight
The most common choice for sightseeing trips are castles and chateaus. However, tourists also go to museums and galleries, towers, temples, folk architecture or follow in the footsteps of famous personalities. Cultural monuments also play an important role in total expenditure.
"According to the latest available data from 2023, spending on activities in the cultural heritage category accounted for about 17 % of all tourist spending. Of this, the largest amount was in Prague - nearly 80 %. Those travelling to see the sights are mainly those further afield. It's logical - if one is already considering a longer trip, one wants to see as much of the country as possible. However, history lovers also include peoples who have culture in their blood. This includes countries such as Belgium, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Great Britain and Israel. More distant destinations include Japan, South Korea and the USA." summarizes the director of the Czech Tourism Centre - CzechTourism Frantisek Reismüller and adds: "In contrast, tourists especially from neighbouring countries spend their stay in the Czech Republic in other ways. The trend in this respect is mainly active holidays, when people combine sports, nature, but also traveling for gastronomy with cultural experiences. They enjoy the ideal mix that makes the Czech Republic an attractive destination for all ages."

Monuments as one of the pillars of CzechTourism campaigns
Cultural monuments also play a key role in the presentation of the Czech Republic abroad. They are part of most of the marketing activities of the CzechTourism agency and help promote not only the main tourist centres, but also lesser-known locations that have something to offer and are definitely worth a visit.
