President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris comment on the death of Quincy Jones:
"He lived his life uninhibited and used his talents to uplift others. He broke down barriers and opened doors for those who came after him, not for praise, but because he knew the power of our collective potential.
For more than half a century, Quincy Jones has created art that has brought joy to millions of people as a composer, arranger, music and film producer. As an activist, Quincy Jones has championed civil and human rights. He brought together artists who wanted to unite their voices to push for change. Quincy Jones was a role model especially for young people of color in the music industry, whom he provided inspiration and mentorship.
I was honored to call Quincy a friend. I will always remember his generosity of spirit, selfless support and deep kindness. Our world has lost a great man. But in his melodies and in the lives he touched, Quincy's legacy will live on forever." She told Harris.
"Quincy Jones was a musical genius who changed the soul of America - one beat, one rhythm and one rhyme at a time.
Growing up as a child struggling with segregation and poverty, music was a refuge for him. As a teenager, he studied with some of the best musicians of all time.
Over the next seven decades, he became a producer, composer, instrumentalist, executive director and much more, discovering some of our most iconic artists and shaping some of the most memorable recordings and scores in history.
His God-given talent has earned him countless awards and honors in music, film and television. He is one of the few Americans to win an EGOT award and has received 28 Grammy Awards, one of the highest honors of all time.
In a way, Quincy Jones only cemented black culture as American culture.
He was a great unifier who believed deeply in the healing power of music to restore hope and uplift those suffering from hunger, poverty and violence, in the Americas and on the African continent." He stated Biden.
