Jan Preisler's solution to the problem of the figure in the landscape is typical of the painter. Preisler's changing understanding of this symbol, its transformation from ethereal levitating figures, through symbolist poses, to their realisation, can be clearly observed in its development. This is fundamentally manifested in the paintings from the free series Black Lakes. In terms of content, these are very compact paintings; the individual motifs together build a story, the reading of which offers different variants, from the interpretation connected with the myth of Narcissus, through reflections connected with psychoanalytic reading, to synthesizing philosophical theses. Not only because of their strong content, but also because of their bravura painting, these works are among the highlights of Preisler's oeuvre, as well as of European Symbolism.
