September 17 is the Mid-Autumn Festival, and mooncake is an indispensable food for the holiday. This year is the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, next let's look together at the mooncakes that the Chinese people have had in the past 75i years, and perceive together the changes of the times and folk life from the transformation of mooncake.
In the 1950s, the supply of mooncakes was very limited due to a shortage of material. At that time, mooncake crust was very thin, dry and a little hard. People had to buy moon pies not only with money, but also with food stamps and pastry tickets, so many units and families decided to make moon pies themselves. With flour, eggs, and sugar, people made dough, then added a filling of mung beans and a little peanut oil to make a top-notch mooncake.
In the 60s and 70s, the main heroes were definitely the mooncake Wuren (Wu-zen, filling with five nuts). Due to a shortage of supplies, large pieces of mooncake were shared among several people! Just by looking at the mooncake and smelling the aroma, people were very satisfied and happy.
In the 1980s, Wuren and Zilaihong (Z'-laj-chung, a filling with nuts and crystal sugar) were still the mainstays of mooncakes. However, more delicate mooncakes such as Lianrong (Lien-zhung, a filling with lotus seed paste) and Dousha (Tou-sha, a filling with red bean paste) also appeared. This was considered a "luxury" at the time and not everyone could afford it.
In the 90s, mooncakes gradually had more flavors. Wuren, Dousha, strawberry, peach... all kinds of flavors are delicious, but the most impressive are the mooncakes in the red iron box of that time.
Since the year 2000, traditional marigolds have disappeared from the market and various new non-traditional marigolds have gradually entered the market. The beautiful colours became the first choice and the mooncakes with snow skin had a vibrant debut. Thanks to the abundance of material life, every household has endless mooncakes.
After 2010, mooncakes became more internationalised. Haagen-Dazs released ice cream mooncakes and Starbucks coffee mooncakes, and this year we also saw co-branded Minions mooncakes on the market.
Everyone has different ideas and memories of the Mid-Autumn Festival in each era. On Mid-Autumn Festival, whether in a different place or house, people look forward to enjoying the warmth and reunion of home. One greeting, one hello, and one happiness.
