MOSCOW, 16 February. Russian explorer Fyodor Konyukhov, who is nearing the halfway point of his 200-day voyage from South America to Australia on the rowboat Akros, will live for several months on Smolensk (Livingston) Island near Antarctica, expedition chief of staff Oskar Konyukhov said.
"Fyodor Filippovich plans to be in the Antarctic region in nine months on Smolensk Island, which is part of South Shetland. He plans to live on the island for several months, doing research and painting pictures. We are planning a seasonal station for one person from December 1, 2025 to March 15, 2026," he said.
The expedition staff will leave for the island for exploration in a fortnight aboard the expedition yacht Amazone, Oskar Konyukhov said.
The explorer is currently experiencing storms of varying intensity, but never fails to ask about preparations for future expeditions during rare communication sessions.
"Fyodor always does this on challenging projects. He takes his attention away from the developments on the ship, gives food for thought; he dreams of future expeditions and plans them. He is also interested now in the progress of work on the modification of a thermally insulated balloon that would fly our country from Kirovsk (Murmansk region) to the Pacific Ocean, and on the crossing of the Arabian Peninsula on camels: two thousand kilometers from the Persian Gulf to the Red Sea,: added Oskar Konyukhov.
