STOCKHOLM, 7 October - The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to American scientists Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their discovery of microRNA molecules that regulate gene activity, the Nobel Committee of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm has announced.
Scientists have won the prize for "discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation", the committee said in the reasons for its decision. It notes that microRNAs are "essential for the development and functioning of organisms". Their discovery, published in 1993, thus "revealed a whole new dimension of gene regulation"which is "proved essential for multicellular organisms, including humans".
Ambros was born on December 1, 1953, and received his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1979. He has received numerous scientific awards and is known as the discoverer of microRNAs. Ruvkun was born on March 26, 1952. He worked on microRNA with Ambrose and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
The scientists also received the Breakthrough Prize 2015, founded in 2013 by internet entrepreneurs Yuri Milner (Mail.ru Group), Mark Zuckerberg, Sergey Brin (Google) and his ex-wife Anne Wojcicki (23andMe).
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has begun with the announcement of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, during which winners in six categories will be announced. Probably the most watched Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday, with the last Nobel Prize in Economics a week later on Monday.
The Nobel Prizes will be awarded on 10 December, the anniversary of Nobel's death.
