Boeing has reached a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) in criminal proceedings related to two 737 Max accidents in 2018 and 2019 that killed 346 people, the U.S. aircraft manufacturer and the DOJ announced Monday, July 8. The agreement avoids a lawsuit that could have shed light on numerous decisions made by the aircraft manufacturer prior to the accidents, which occurred less than five months apart in Indonesia and Ethiopia in late 2018 and early 2019.
The agreement was upheld after prosecutors concluded that the aviation giant had violated an earlier agreement related to the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines 737 Max crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia in late 2018 and early 2019. In mid-May, the Justice Department ruled that the aircraft manufacturer had failed to comply with a 2021 deferred prosecution agreement (DPA) that required it to improve its compliance and ethics program following the two crashes.
