Consumer prices rose by 1.3 % month-on-month. This development was mainly influenced by higher prices in the food and non-alcoholic beverages and alcoholic beverages, tobacco sections. Year-on-year, consumer prices rose by 2.8 % in January, 0.2 percentage point lower than in December.

Month-on-month, consumer prices rose by 1.3 % in January. In the food and non-alcoholic beverages section, prices were mainly higher by 7.1 % for vegetables, 6.5 % for fruit, 4.1 1 % for soft drinks, 4.1 1 % for cheese and curd, 5.7 % for poultry, 3.0 % for pork, 1.7 % for sausages and 1.7 % for semi-skimmed long-life milk. In the alcoholic beverages, tobacco section, prices of spirits increased by 10.8 %, wine by 13.0 %, beer by 3.5 % and tobacco products by 0.4 %. The price development in the recreation and culture division was mainly influenced by higher prices of package holidays by 5.7 %. Conversely, the month-on-month decrease in the overall price level in January was mostly driven by prices in the clothing and footwear division, where prices of clothing were down by 1.9 % and footwear by 2.7 %. Among foodstuffs, egg prices were lower by 6.6 %.
Aggregate prices of goods rose by 1.5 % and prices of services by 1.0 %.

"January annual consumer price inflation was strongly influenced by food and housing prices. Food prices continued to rise year-on-year and were higher by almost 5 % compared to last January. Housing prices, on the other hand, slowed their growth and were 1.3 % higher than last year," She told Pavla Šedivá, Head of the Consumer Price Statistics Division of the CZSO.
Year-on-year, consumer prices rose by 2.8 % in January, 0.2 percentage point less than in December. Electricity prices went from a rise of 8.0 % in December to a fall of 4.7 % in January. Natural gas prices declined by 7.7 % (down 5.5 % in December). In the food and non-alcoholic beverages section, on the other hand, most of the monitored items accelerated its year-on-year price growth or moderated its year-on-year decline. Prices in the milk, cheese, eggs group rose by 8.0 % in January (up 5.4 % in December), while fruit rose by 7.4 % (up 5.9 % in December). Vegetable prices in January fell by 0.7 % yoy (down 5.1 % in December), sugar by 21.6 % (down 30.4 % in December), flour by 5.8 % (down 10.3 % in December). Meat prices in January rose by 3.5 % (down 1.1 1 % in December).

On a year-on-year basis price level increase the largest price increases in January were in the food and non-alcoholic beverages section, where (in addition to the above-mentioned) the prices of eggs increased by 24.7 %, butter by 40.5 % and chocolate and chocolate products by 27.8 %. Second in order of influence were prices in the alcoholic beverages, tobacco section, where prices of spirits increased by 3.6 %, wine by 0.4 %, beer by 1.8 % and tobacco products by 7.4 %. In the food and accommodation division, prices of food services and accommodation services were higher by 5.2 and 8.7 % respectively. In the housing division, in addition to the above, prices of rent from dwellings increased by 6.6 % and goods and services for the routine maintenance of dwellings by 3.4 %. Price developments in the recreation and culture division were mainly influenced by higher prices for full-service holidays by 3.6 %. The year-on-year decline in the overall price level in January was again driven by prices in the clothing and footwear division, where prices for clothing fell by 1.2 % and for footwear by 4.3 %.
The cost of owner-occupied housing (imputed rent) increased by 2.9 % yoy (1.7 % in December), mainly due to the rise in new property prices. The aggregate consumer price index excluding the cost of owner-occupied housing was 102.8 %.
Aggregate prices of goods rose by 1.7 % and prices of services by 4.7 %.
The level of the core CPI to the 2015 base period average was 154.0 % in January (152.0 % in December).
The inflation rate, expressed as the increase in the average consumer price index over the past 12 months compared with the average of the previous 12 months, was 2.5 % in January (2.4 % in December).
Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP)
According to preliminary HICP calculations in January in the Czech Republic Monthly increased by 1.4 % and year-on-year by 2.9 % (3.3 % in December). According to flash estimates. Eurostat was year-on-year HICP change in January 2025 for the Eurozone 2.5 % (2.4 % in December), 2.8 % in Germany and 4.1 % in Slovakia. The highest was in Croatia in January (5.0 %) and the lowest in Ireland (1.5 %). According to preliminary Eurostat data, the year-on-year HICP change The 27 EU countries in December 2.7 %, which was 0.2 percentage point higher than in November. It was highest in Romania (5.5 %) and lowest in Ireland (1.0 %) in December.
