CZSO: Annual retail sales growth slowed down

Retail sales increased by 2.8 % yoy in real terms in January and decreased by 0.5 % m-o-m. Sales and repair of motor vehicles rose by 0.7 % y-o-y and by 1.2 % m-o-m.

Month-on-month sales in retail trade, except of motor vehicles¹⁾ decreased by 0.5 % in real terms in January, while non-food goods fell by 1.4 %, while food increased by 0.4 % and fuel by 0.2 %.

Year-on-year, retail sales increased by 2.8 % in real terms in January. Sales of fuel rose by 5.4 %, non-food goods by 3.1 % and food by 1.5 %.

"Retail sales adjusted for price effects rose year-on-year for food, fuel and non-food goods. Internet sales and fuel sales were the main contributors to sales growth. Lower sales were recorded for computer and communication equipment and household goods stores. The growth rate of retail sales in January decreased compared to the previous seven months," Says Jana Gotvaldová, Head of the Statistics of Trade, Transport and Services Division of the CZSO.

Sales in specialised stores selling cosmetics and toiletries increased by 6.8 %, pharmaceutical and medical goods by 6.7 %, clothing and footwear by 4.5 % and culture, sport and recreation by 1.2 %. Conversely, sales in computer and communication equipment stores fell by 7.6 % and in household goods by 2.0 %. Sales increased by 1.7 % in specialised food stores and by 1.5 % in non-specialised food-dominated stores. Sales in non-food-dominated non-specialised stores increased by 2.9 %. Internet and mail order shops²⁾ Sales increased by 6.0 %.

Revenue for the sale and repair of motor vehicles³⁾ real month-on-month sales increased by 1.2 %.Year-on-year sales increased by 0.7 %, including 2.8 % for repairs of motor vehicles and 0.1 1 % for sales of motor vehicles (including spare parts).
