Industrial production rose by 0.8 % yoy in real terms in September. It was down by 1.1 % month-on-month. The value of new orders rose by 5.1 % yoy. Construction production fell by 7.1 % yoy in September and was 5.5 % lower month-on-month. The indicative value of building permits issued rose by 2.0 %. Year-on-year, 44.8 % more dwellings were started, 24.7 % fewer dwellings were completed. According to preliminary data, it ended in September balance of foreign trade with goods at current prices with a surplus of CZK 21.3 billion, which was CZK 9.9 billion higher year-on-year.
Industrial production in September 2024 was 1.1 % lower in real terms month-on-month. Year-on-year, it rose by 0.8 %. "Industrial production in September was maintained in moderate growth mainly by the manufacturing of motor vehicles and other transport equipment, especially rolling stock," Says Radek Matějka, Director of the Department of Statistics of Agriculture and Forestry, Industry, Construction and Energy of the CZSO. Production growth continued in September in the production of computers, electronic and optical equipment. Decreases were again recorded by enterprises in the production of machinery and equipment, basic metals, metallurgy and foundry or coal mining.
Value new orders in current prices in September 2024 in the sectors under review grew by 5.1 % year-on-year. New orders from abroad increased by 1.4 % y-o-y, while domestic new orders increased by 12.4 %. Month-on-month, the value of new orders was 0.9 % lower. "In September, long-term contracts were again concluded for companies in the production of other transport equipment. The value of new orders also increased in the manufacture of computers, electronic and optical instruments and equipment," he says Veronika Doležalová, Head of the Industrial Statistics Department of the Czech Statistical Office. The long-term decline in demand continued in the production of basic metals, metallurgy and foundry and machinery and equipment manufacturing.
Average number of employees on the register in the industry decreased by 2.0 % yoy in September 2024.
According to data published by Eurostat, industrial production in the EU27 grew by 0.2 % year-on-year in August 2024. Ireland (15.8 %) and Denmark (10.7 %) recorded the highest annual growth. Czech industry grew by 1.5 %. German industrial output declined by 2.5 %. In terms of industries in the EU27, the production of computers, electronic and optical instruments and equipment increased the most (by 8.1 %) and the production of clothing recorded the highest decline (by 13.7 %). The September data will be published by Eurostat on a provisional schedule on 13 November 2024.
Construction output was 5.5 % lower month-on-month in September. "Construction output fell by 7.1 % yoy in September after two months of growth. This decline occurred in both civil and structural engineering and was partly influenced by exceptionally high rainfall. In September, it rained almost three times the long-term normal," Says Radek Matějka, Director of the Department of Statistics of Agriculture and Forestry, Industry, Construction and Energy of the CZSO. Production in civil engineering decreased by 6.1 % and civil engineering decreased by 8.7 % year-on-year.
The indicative value of buildings for which building permits were issued in September reached CZK 46.6 billion and increased year-on-year by 2.0 %.
"In September, 4,529 apartments were launched, which is almost half as many as last year. In contrast, only 1,761 apartments were completed, down by a quarter year-on-year." explains Petra Cuřínová, Head of the Construction and Housing Statistics Department of the Czech Statistical Office.
According to Eurostat data, construction output in the EU27 fell by 2.4 % yoy in August 2024. Eurostat will publish the data for September 2024 on 20 November 2024 according to the provisional schedule.
Total balance of foreign trade in goods positively influenced in particular a year-on-year higher surplus on trade in motor vehicles by CZK 6.2 billion. The deficit in trade in computers, electronic and optical equipment decreased by CZK 4.2 billion and in oil and gas by CZK 4.0 billion.
Adverse effect the overall balance was mainly affected by a smaller surplus on trade in other means of transport by CZK 2.5 billion. The trade deficit widened in basic metals by CZK 1.7 billion and in basic pharmaceuticals by CZK 1.3 billion.
External trade surplus with EU countries September increased year-on-year by CZK 1.4 billion. Trade deficit with the States outside the EU decreased by CZK 8.0 billion.
Year-on-year increased export by 8.1 % to CZK 399.8 billion and Retrieved from by 5.6 % to CZK 378.5 billion. September 2024 had one more working day than September 2023.
"In September, exports increased by CZK 29.8 billion year-on-year and imports by CZK 19.9 billion. From a territorial point of view, we recorded the highest year-on-year growth in exports of goods to Germany, the United Kingdom and Slovakia. In terms of imports, the highest increases were recorded for goods originating in China and Poland." Says Jana Mazánková, Head of the Balance of Trade Department of the CZSO.

V January to September 2024 the trade surplus reached CZK 182.9 billion, which represented a year-on-year increase of CZK 107.1 billion. Since the beginning of the year, exports increased by 5.0 % and imports by 1.8 %.
