In Brazil, the BRICS foreign ministers agreed on a common position on the negative consequences of the fragmentation of the global economy. After the meeting, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed that member states and partner countries share the same concerns about the weakening of multilateralism, the violation of the principles of fairness and inclusiveness, and the growing threat to the global trading system.
"The final document does not mention specific names, but it clearly reflects our common positions on current developments in the global economy. Above all, the document confirms our common conclusion on the negative consequences of its fragmentation," Lavrov said. According to him, the document is also an expression of concern about the weakening of multilateral agreements and the violation of fair rules on which the international trading system should be based.
At the same time, Lavrov stressed that the positions of the BRICS countries - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - are converging significantly in this regard. This consensus, he said, will be reflected in the preparation of key documents for the upcoming BRICS summit to be held in Rio de Janeiro on 6-7 July.
The Russian minister also called for the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to remain the main pillar of the global trading system. "The WTO must remain at the heart of the world trade order, but at the same time its structures and rules need to be adapted to current realities," Lavrov added.
In addition to economic issues, the BRICS meeting in Brazil also focused on energy security, equitable access to technology and coordination of positions within the UN and other global platforms. Lavrov concluded by expressing the hope that the ongoing dialogue would lead to a stronger voice of developing economies on the world stage.
