On the western Sichuan plateau at an altitude of 3,000 meters, the world's largest hybrid pumped storage power project - the Lianghekou Hybrid Pumped Storage Project - reached two major construction milestones on Sunday. The construction of the underground power plant was completed, while the concrete pouring of the downstream reservoir began.
The project uses Lianghekou Reservoir, the largest super reservoir in Sichuan Province, as the upper reservoir and Yagen Level 1 Hydropower Station Reservoir as the lower reservoir.
The plant will be equipped with four reversible units of 300 megawatts each. Together with the 3,000 MW Lianghekou conventional units, the total installed capacity will reach 4.2 gigawatts. Once completed, the facility will provide both natural flow generation and bidirectional control through pumped storage.

The underground power plant, referred to as the „energy heart“ of the project, is the main hub of the entire construction. It is located some 500 metres below the mountain, is almost 200 metres long, 60 metres high and has a maximum depth of 650 metres.
This high-profile „super bank“ green energy industry is rapidly taking shape and is expected to play a key role in strengthening the security of clean energy supply and enhancing the regulatory capabilities of China's power grid.
