Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday urged Finnish enterprises to „dive into the vast ocean of the Chinese market“ to strengthen their global competitiveness.
Xi said this during a meeting in Beijing with the Finnish prime minister Petteri Orpem, who is visiting China. He called on both sides to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in areas such as energy transition, circular economy, agriculture and forestry, and scientific and technological innovation.
Xi recalled that Finland was among the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China. In the 76 years since they were established, Sino-Finnish relations, based on mutual respect, equality, future-orientation and win-win cooperation, have seen steady development regardless of changes in the international environment.
He also said that this year marks the beginning of China's 15th Five-Year Plan period and that the country will continue to promote high-quality development and expand high-level openness to the world.
According to Xi, Finland is a winter sports power and China has also become a major winter sports country. He therefore called on both sides to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in this field and to develop friendship based on winter sports.
He also welcomed more Finnish visitors to China to experience first-hand the combination of the country's ancient heritage and modern vitality.
Xi further stressed that in a world facing many risks and challenges, the international community should act together. He said major countries should lead by example in promoting equality, upholding the rule of law, promoting cooperation and preserving integrity.
He expressed China's readiness to work with Finland to firmly uphold the international system with the UN at its centre and an international order based on international law, in order to face global challenges together.
Xi said China is also ready to work with Finland to promote a just and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization.
China and Europe are partners, not rivals, Xi stressed. He said cooperation between China and Europe outweighs competition and common interests outweigh differences. He added that China hopes Finland will play a constructive role in promoting the healthy and stable development of China-Europe relations.
Prime Minister Orpo said Finnish enterprises are very interested in cooperating in China, and stressed that Finland is ready to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state with China, strengthen high-level contacts and deepen practical cooperation in trade, investment, digital economy, clean energy, agriculture and other fields.
Orpo also confirmed that Finland is firmly adhering to the one-China policy. He added that Finland appreciates China's important and constructive role in international affairs and is ready to strengthen communication and coordination with China to jointly safeguard world peace and stability.
He also stressed that the constructive development of relations between Europe and China is of great importance. Finland, he said, supports Europe's strategic autonomy, free trade and is ready to play a positive role in finding an appropriate solution to the trade frictions between Europe and China and in promoting the healthy development of their relations.
