Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed the government to consider creating a Central Eurasian Transport Corridor through Mongolia and western China. As stated in a list of instructions on the Kremlin's website dated October 11, the deadline for implementation is set for February 15, 2024.
"Consider the issue of creating a Central Eurasian transport corridor through Mongolia and western China and submit proposals for possible measures for its creation," the order said.
The President approved the new list of guidelines following a meeting on the socio-economic development of the Krasnoyarsk Territory held on 31 August 2023.
Earlier, on September 11, Russian Railways CEO Oleg Belozerov noted during the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) session "New Logistics of the Far East - the 'White Swan' of the Russian Economy" that the volume of rail traffic with China grew by 26 % compared to last year - it carried 123 million passengers. Border crossings with China are also increasing by almost 30 %, Belozerov said.
On 12 September, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin told the Izvestiya correspondent on the sidelines of the EEF that today the road network in the North-South corridor is already functioning, but its infrastructure needs to be improved, including expanding the capacity of checkpoints.
According to the Deputy Prime Minister, it is first of all necessary to modernise checkpoints at the borders of Iran and Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, as well as at the border between Kazakhstan and Russia.
