According to the National Nuclear Safety Authority, the closure and subsequent decommissioning of nuclear power plants and the safe storage of radioactive material can take more than 20 years.
Bratislava, January 9 (TASR) - Although the third unit of the Mochovce nuclear power plant was only put into full operation in September 2023 and the fourth unit will be commissioned in early 2025, the National Nuclear Fund (NNF) already has plans for financially securing their decommissioning in the more distant future. This was informed by the Value for Money Unit (VU) in a post on the social networking site. The total estimated cost in the future will reach €3.25 billion.
These costs will be paid by the operators of nuclear power plants. "Their lifetime is estimated at 60 years. After that, the plants must be shut down. The decommissioning of the V2 nuclear power plant in Jaslovské Bohunice will start in 2045, the Mochovce 1, 2 nuclear power plant in 2061, the Mochovce 3, 4 nuclear power plant in 2083," the ÚHP said.
The closure and subsequent decommissioning of nuclear power plants and the safe storage of radioactive material may take more than 20 years, according to the Office of the National Nuclear Safety Authority. "For example, decommissioning of the Mochovce 3 or Mochovce 4 reactors is expected to cost approximately EUR 630 million," the Institute said.
However, decommissioning Slovak nuclear power plants will be on average 16 % cheaper, according to NJF. "The cost of decommissioning the Mochovce 3 or Mochovce 4 reactors has been estimated by the Fund at €514 million in 2023 prices. In practice, the cost may be even lower, as the decommissioning of the Kozloduy nuclear power plant in Bulgaria has shown," the IHP said.
In decommissioning, the department said it will be important not to exceed the projected budget of the NJF, otherwise the additional costs are likely to be borne by the end consumers of electricity.
