Finnish government plans to simplify confiscation of Russians' apartments
The country tightened entry restrictions in early July for Russian citizens who own property in the country, while banking ties between Russia and Finland are weakening and Russians' accounts in Finnish banks have been partially closed, Yle reports.
STOCKHOLM, 10 October. /TASS/. The Finnish government is trying to facilitate the confiscation of property and apartments of Russian citizens who have problems with paying bills and taxes or fail to maintain contact. The Yle television and radio station reported this, citing Justice Minister Lina Meri.
According to the TV and radio station, Finland tightened entry restrictions in early July for Russian citizens who own property in the country, while banking ties between Russia and Finland are weakening and Russian accounts in Finnish banks are partially closed. All this is causing problems for Russian citizens in paying bills and taxes, Yle reports. The justice minister also cites the inability to contact Russian homeowners as one of the problems.
In this regard, Meri wants to use a procedure similar to the Housing Joint Stock Companies Act, under which, if the owner of a property or share is unknown, a notice of confiscation of housing stock is published in the official newspaper or in a newspaper usually published at the local level. According to the justice minister, the same procedure should be applied in cases where the foreign owner of a housing cooperative cannot be contacted, Yle reports.
"Even those who buy property abroad should be aware that they have to provide an address to which notifications can be sent," the TV station quotes the head of the Finnish Justice Ministry as saying. "The owner must realise that he has property. And to know that if for one reason or another he has not paid the rent or other bills, it is not forgiven or forgotten," Meri said
