WUHAN, Oct. 9 /Sinhua/ -- At the end of the first three quarters of this year, cargo traffic through the locks of Sanxia /Three Gorges/ hydropower plant, the world's largest hydropower project, was 127 million tons, up 10.02 % from the previous year, data released Sunday showed.
According to a report by the Three Gorges Shipping Authority, cargo turnover in the first three quarters of the locks' operation exceeded 120 million tonnes for the first time in their 20 years of operation.
From January to September, the number of cargo ships passing through the locks totalled 32,000 times, the authority's data showed.
In August alone, cargo turnover through Sanxia reached 15.71 million tonnes, breaking the previous monthly record of 15 million tonnes.
The Sanxia Locks are part of a hydraulic engineering project of the same name on the country's longest waterway, the Yangtze River, and are a multi-functional water management system.
