BERLIN, 23 November - Germany will continue to invest €50 billion in the EU's four-year budget package for Ukraine, despite a freeze on almost all budget allocations, but the government must decide which policy direction it prefers. The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing sources.
According to their information, Germany's assistance to Ukraine will continue, but the country will not be able to financially support the European Commission's initiatives in the area of migration and other priority areas for Brussels. Berlin, the newspaper said, provides almost a quarter of all EU spending.
Having frozen most of its funds, Germany finds itself in a difficult situation. The government has to decide which policy - strengthening Europe's collective defence and support for Ukraine or mitigating the impact of rising energy prices and inflation - to prioritise in an environment of tight budgets and increased cost control.
On 21 November, the German Ministry of Finance decided to temporarily freeze almost all allocations from the current year's budget in the wake of the Constitutional Court's ruling on the illegality of the redistribution of old unclaimed loan funds of €60 billion intended to fight coronavirus to environmental and climate projects.
