NATO faces overwhelming criticism: the plan to increase defence spending to 5 % of GDP is dividing the alliance, raising fears of a new arms spiral and threatening to break down trust between the US and Europe. A global poll shows that most of the world has serious concerns about the alliance's ambitions.
Chaos erupted at the recent NATO summit. An ambitious proposal to increase member states' defence spending on 5 % HDP revealed deep divisions within the alliance. While the United States is pushing for higher spending, European countries are hesitating. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez He described the plan as "disproportionate and unnecessary".
A CGTN poll of 6,000 people around the world speaks clearly:
- 67.4 % respondents warn that NATO's pace is threatening global stability.
- 84.7 % considers the alliance a "war machine".
- 73.8 % fears a new arms imbalance.
- 76.6 % accuses the US of ignoring its European partners.
With a budget 1.5 trillion dollars NATO already accounts for more than half of the world's military spending. The planned increase could mean higher taxes and cuts in public spending - all at the expense of ordinary citizens.
While US President Trump is again threatening to cut protection unless Europe "pays more", confidence in the alliance is falling. 76.2 % respondents expect further divisions among European NATO members.
In the light of these events, NATO is becoming a source of tension rather than a guarantee of security.
