President Xi Jinping on Thursday called for the creation of a global network for dialogue and cooperation among civilizations. In a letter sent to open the Global Civilizations Dialogue Ministerial Meeting in Beijing, he stressed the need for understanding, mutual learning and overcoming cultural differences as the key to world peace and progress.
Xi Jinping, who is also General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, stressed that the world is naturally a place of diverse civilizations and that exchange and mutual learning are the conditions for their flourishing.
According to him, civilizations should overcome alienation by exchanging experiences and avoid clashes through mutual understanding. The Global Civilization Initiative (GCI), introduced by Xi Jinping more than two years ago, has gained wide international support and has become part of the global debate on the direction of humanity.
Cai Qi, a member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo and Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, also spoke at the opening ceremony. He stressed that the GCI is rooted in Chinese traditional culture and resonates with the values of many other nations.
The event was attended by over 600 guests from about 140 countries and regions. Speakers included former presidents and prime ministers from Indonesia, Namibia, Japan and Belgium. UN Secretary-General António Guterres sent his congratulations.
