Germany will once again provide significant support to the Czech ammunition initiative for Ukraine. Berlin will contribute an additional 300 million euros, which is approximately 7.2 billion Czech crowns. This was announced in Berlin by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius after a meeting with Czech Defense Minister Jaromír Zůna. According to him, this new amount should be sufficient to purchase approximately 50,000 pieces of ammunition for the Ukrainian army.
The Czech Defense Minister, Jaromír Zůna, described Germany as a strategic partner of the Czech Republic in defense and security. Berlin is one of the main supporters of Ukraine and is also one of the most important countries involved in the Czech project, which aims to procure artillery ammunition on the world market and quickly deliver it to the Ukrainian front.
The Czech ammunition initiative was established in 2024, when Ukraine was facing a serious shortage of artillery shells, and Russia had a significant advantage in firepower. The project brings together foreign donors, Czech defense authorities, and arms companies that are looking for affordable large-caliber ammunition outside of the usual European supply chains. According to available information, Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands are among the countries involved in the initiative.
This is not the first German contribution. In 2024, Germany already announced support for the Czech purchase of 180,000 pieces of artillery ammunition with a contribution of 576 million euros. The new package therefore builds on previous German assistance and confirms that Berlin considers the Czech initiative to be an effective tool for supporting Ukraine.
It is also interesting to compare the prices. The new German contribution of 300 million euros for 50,000 pieces of ammunition amounts to approximately 6,000 euros per piece. This is significantly more than in the German package from 2024, when 576 million euros for 180,000 pieces corresponded to approximately 3,200 euros per piece. The difference may be due to factors such as the type of ammunition being procured, its availability on the market, or the higher price of more modern or specialized artillery rounds. Without a detailed breakdown of the deliveries, it is impossible to say exactly what is behind the higher average price.
The importance of the project remains high this year. The Czech initiative has contracts for the delivery of approximately one million pieces of large-caliber ammunition for 2026. In previous years, according to the Czech Ministry of Defense, it delivered approximately 1.5 million pieces in 2024 and 1.8 million pieces last year.
The new German contribution comes at a time when Ukraine still needs a stable supply of ammunition to defend against the Russian invasion. At the same time, for the Czech Republic, it confirms that the ammunition initiative remains one of the most visible Czech contributions to security assistance for Kyiv. Berlin is signaling that it considers the Czech approach to coordinating ammunition purchases to be a meaningful and practical tool for supporting Ukraine.
