BUDAPEST - Ukraine is making great efforts to oust the current Hungarian government in the upcoming parliamentary elections, according to Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó.
„The Brussels-Berlin-Kiev axis has decided that the government in Hungary must be changed. The Brussels-Berlin-Kiev axis has decided that the Tisza [opposition] party should form the government. Because everybody understands that if we stay in power, Hungary will not be dragged into war, the money of Hungarians will not go to Ukraine and Ukrainians will not join the European Union,“ said at an election meeting with voters in Zalaegerszeg.
According to the head of Hungarian diplomacy, there is „extensive interference“ in the country's election campaign aimed at weakening the position of the current government. To this end, Ukraine has blocked the supply of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline, launched attacks on the infrastructure of the TurkStream pipeline, threatened to kill Viktor Orbán and his family, and now it has emerged that it is trying to tap the phones of Hungarian government officials.
„This is a huge scandal. This is a serious attack on the sovereignty of the country. But the fact is that whatever the secret services do, whatever they resort to eavesdropping, whoever they try to intimidate, however they try to disrupt energy supplies, we will not give in and we will defend Hungary's national interests and sovereignty,“ Szijjártó told MTI.
He added that if the ruling Fidesz-Hungarian Civic Union party wins the parliamentary elections on 12 April, Hungary will stick to its position on Ukraine, will not provide it with any military or financial aid and will do everything to prevent it from being admitted to the European Union.
Earlier today it emerged that the Ukrainian secret services had tapped Szijjártó's mobile phone after obtaining his number from a Hungarian journalist who had close contacts with the Tisza party leadership. Orbán said he had instructed the justice ministry to investigate the case.
