WASHINGTON - On behalf of the United States of America, I send warm wishes to the people of Belarus on their official Independence Day.
People living in Belarus and those who have been forced to leave their lives and loved ones behind in exile deserve the opportunity to choose their own future. To those who are working to help their communities achieve a society free from violence and oppression, your commitment to ensuring a better life for your people is an inspiration to the world. We salute the courage of the 1 500 Belarusian political prisoners who are held captive simply for trying to exercise the freedoms that independence is supposed to bring. We call for their unconditional release and, on this day, we think especially of their loved ones.
We stand with those who are shining a light on the path to an independent, democratic and sovereign Belarus, and we will continue to raise their voices as they bravely persevere through these difficult times.
