McMahill said this at a press briefing.
Police said a number of victims were taken to hospitals.
"This is an active investigation. Please continue to avoid the area and monitor responding emergency units," LVMPD said on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Around noon local time, the university posted an emergency announcement online, "University Police responding to reports of shots fired in BEH, evacuate to a safe area, RUN-HIDE."
Shortly afterwards, the university said on X that police were responding to "further reports of a shooting in the Student Union" and advised people to evacuate the area.
The LVMPD did not disclose the condition of those injured in the shooting. An investigation into the shooter's motives is ongoing.
UNLV, located less than two miles east of the Las Vegas Strip, has an enrollment of approximately 25,400 students and 4,300 alumni.
