WASHINGTON, Jan 4. The outgoing administration of U.S. President Joe Biden plans to sell Israel an $8 billion arms package, Axios reported, citing its sources.
According to the news server, the US State Department has informally notified Congress of its intention to conclude an agreement with Israel under which the country will receive arms and ammunition from the US. Specifically, Washington will provide Israel with air-to-air missiles for fighter jets and attack helicopters, artillery shells, small-diameter bombs, additional JDAM ammunition kits, 500-pound (about 227-kilogram) bombs and other munitions.
Axios sources stress that the agreement is intended to ensure Israel's long-term security support. Some weapons are expected to be transferred to Israel directly from Pentagon warehouses, but most weapons will take a year or more to be delivered.
The news portal pointed out that any arms sales to Israel would have to be approved by the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
