LONDON, May 24, 2024 (Xinhua) -- British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak speaks in front of 10 Downing Street in London on May 22, 2024. Sunak announced on Wednesday that the country will hold a general election on July 4.
Rishi Sunaka's performance was quite unexpected. From all indications yesterday, the earliest the parliamentary elections could be held was in the autumn. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak proposed to King Charles III of Great Britain to dissolve Parliament and the monarch agreed. The election is expected to be easily won by the opposition Labour Party.
During his speech, politician Rishi Sunak braved not only the rain but also the protesters, who played loudly from afar the song Things Can Only Get Better, which Labour used in the Tony Blair era. Despite all this, Prime Minister Sunak managed to deliver a summation of all that his government had achieved under his leadership, while questioning whether Labour had any better agenda.
"I don't know what they're offering - and frankly, I don't think you do either," he pointed out.
The date of the elections was speculated in Great Britain all day long, also because several ministers cancelled their planned appearances, or shortened or postponed their foreign visits due to the meeting of the government's top ministers, which met at an unusual time. Asked during the day about the date of the elections, Sunak himself said they would be held in the second half of the year.
