The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Sunday warned again that trade and tariff wars have no winners, in response to the recent announcement by the United States to impose a 10% additional tariff on imports from China. According to a statement on the ministry's website, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman strongly condemned the US move and announced that China will take necessary countermeasures to defend its legitimate rights and interests.
The spokesman stressed that unilateral tariff increases by the USA seriously violate the rules of the World Trade Organisation and these measures will not help solve the USA's internal problems and will certainly not benefit either party, let alone the world. China calls on the US to correct its mistakes, maintain the hard-fought positive momentum in anti-drug cooperation and promote the stable, healthy and sustainable development of Sino-US relations.
The reaction also comes after US President Donald Trump's decision to sign an executive order on Saturday imposing 10% tariffs on Chinese goods. China's Ministry of Commerce said in response that China will file a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization and implement appropriate countermeasures to protect its rights and interests. The ministry further urged the United States to correct its attitude and jointly seek a path of mutual understanding with China.
