China has called on Japan to distance itself from what Beijing says are erroneous statements made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi about Chinese Taiwan during a United Nations event on Monday.
China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, told the UN Security Council's open debate on international law that victory in World War II protected the core values of human civilization and laid the foundations of the current international legal system.
He also recalled that eighty years ago the International Military Tribunal for the Far East tried Japanese war criminals and severely punished those responsible for the mass violence in the occupied countries. According to Fu Cung, the tribunal thus contributed to the promotion of international justice, the protection of human dignity and sent a clear warning against any efforts to renew militarism or new aggression.
