China responded to the US "reciprocal tariffs" by increasing its additional tariffs on US imports from 84 % to 125 %. The measure took effect on Saturday, the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council said in a notice published on Friday.
The Commission said that, given the current level of tariffs, exports of US goods to China have become commercially unsustainable and therefore China will not respond to any further potential tariff increases by the US.
According to a spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, China will not play the "numbers game", but if the United States takes further steps that harm China's legitimate interests, it will be ready to respond decisively and fight to the end.
Although the US, under pressure from China and other countries, has temporarily postponed the application of excessive tariffs against some trading partners, China has described this as a symbolic gesture that does not change the essence of the US strategy - to use tariffs as a tool of coercion and economic intimidation.
According to the spokesman, the repeated increase in tariffs against Chinese goods is losing economic sense and shows that the US is increasingly abusing tariffs as a means of trade manipulation.
