China strongly rejects the United States' decision to impose so-called "reciprocal tariffs" and will take decisive countermeasures to defend its rights and interests, a Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesman said on Thursday.
He was reacting to the US announcement on Wednesday that it would impose new tariffs on its trading partners as part of a reciprocal approach.
However, according to the Chinese ministry, history shows that raising tariffs does not solve the United States' internal problems - instead, it harms its own interests, threatens global economic growth, and disrupts the stability of industrial and supply chains.
"There are no winners in a trade war and protectionism leads nowhere," the spokesman stressed.
China also called on the United States to immediately lift its unilateral tariff measures and resolve disputes with trading partners through equal dialogue.
