BEIJING - The Third Session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC), China's national legislature, held its second plenary meeting on Saturday to discuss reports on the work of the Standing Committee of the 14th National People's Congress, the Supreme People's Court (SPC) and the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP).
The meeting was attended by Chinese President Xi Jingping and other leaders, including Li Kiang, Wang Huning, Cai Qi, Ding Xuexiang, Li Xia and Han Cheng.
At the meeting, NPC Standing Committee Chairman Zhao Le-ji presented a report on the work of the national legislature.
In assessing the work of the top legislature in 2024, Zhao highlighted its efforts to strengthen the implementation of the Constitution and increase oversight of its observance to preserve its authority and sanctity.
In terms of using legislative functions to strengthen China's socialist legal system, the national legislature passed 39 legislative items last year, 24 of which were passed, including six new laws and 14 revised laws, Zhao said.
The National Legislature was lawfully exercising its oversight duty, Zhao said, adding that it had heard and discussed 21 reports from the State Council, the National Supervisory Commission, the SPC and the SPP.
Zhao said the national legislature has also stepped up efforts to support MPs in carrying out their duties in accordance with the law, including helping MPs maintain close ties with the people.
Zhao presented work plans for national legislation in 2025.
Presenting a report on the work of the Supreme Court, SPC President Zhang Jun said that Chinese courts at all levels received more than 46 million cases and closed more than 45 million cases in 2024, roughly the same as the previous year.
In the past year, China's courts have safeguarded national security and social stability, promoted high-quality development and guaranteed people's well-being by ensuring the strict and impartial administration of justice, he said.
According to Zhang, the courts in 2025 will make new and greater contributions to promoting law-based governance on all fronts and to building a socialist country under the rule of law at a higher level.
Presenting a report on the activities of the Supreme People's Procuratorate, SPP Procurator-General Ying Yong said that in the past year, the procuratorate has, among other things, worked to take the Peace China Initiative to a higher level and improve people's living conditions.
He said that in 2025, prosecutors will deepen reforms and contribute more to the rejuvenation of the country.
