Chinese Premier Li Qiang said on Thursday that the development of artificial intelligence (AI) urgently requires in-depth discussions and consensus building among countries, as well as joint efforts to seize opportunities and overcome challenges.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2024 World Conference on Artificial Intelligence and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance in Shanghai, Li said that in recent years, new AI technologies have been constantly pushing forward, new business models have been emerging and new applications have been rapidly expanding, all of which have become an important driving force for a new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation. At the same time, however, it faces a number of new challenges in areas such as law, security, employment and moral ethics, he added.
Li noted that China has always actively advocated the intelligent revolution, vigorously promoted the innovation and development of artificial intelligence, attached great importance to the safety and management of artificial intelligence, and implemented a series of practical measures.
China has launched a global initiative on AI governance and proposed a resolution on strengthening international cooperation on AI capacity building at the 78th UN General Assembly, which was unanimously adopted. China has conducted positive exploration and contributed constructive ideas and solutions to global AI development and governance, Li said.
Li further said that China is willing to work with other countries to make AI better serve global development and enhance people's well-being.
Efforts should be made to deepen cooperation in innovation and unlock the intelligence dividend, he said, calling for promoting inclusive development and bridging the digital divide, as well as strengthening joint management and ensuring the prosperity of intelligence.
The opening ceremony was attended by approximately 1000 foreign guests and representatives of international organisations, industrial enterprises, universities and research institutes.
The conference issued the Shanghai Declaration on Global Governance of Artificial Intelligence.
