Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said China is ready to continue to actively contribute to restoring peace and stability in the Gulf region and the wider Middle East.
At the regular press conference, she recalled that China's position on the draft UN Security Council resolution on the situation in the Strait of Hormuz had already been clearly explained by China's Permanent Representative to the UN. In her words, China's approach was objective, fair and would stand up to a long-term historical perspective.
At the same time, Mao Ning said that the draft resolution, which China submitted together with Russia, has already been officially circulated to the members of the Security Council. The document, she said, emphasises easing tensions, promoting dialogue and negotiations, while protecting the principles of freedom of navigation. It is these points that are in line with the expectations of the international community, and China therefore hopes that the proposal will gain wider support.
China attaches particular importance to the stability of the Strait of Hormuz, which is one of the world's key transport arteries for trade in goods and energy. Maintaining its security and smooth operation is in the interest of all states, according to Beijing.
China therefore calls on all parties concerned to cooperate and work together to restore the normal functioning of this strategic area as soon as possible.
