Several Chinese chambers of commerce representing various industries have strongly condemned the decision of the United States to impose so-called "reciprocal tariffs" on China. They consider the measures to be unilateral trade pressure practices that violate World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules, damage global supply chains and threaten economic stability.
China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Medicines and Health Products stressed that the health sector should not be a victim of unfair trade practices and expressed support for Chinese countermeasures. The chamber said it would work with the global pharmaceutical industry to protect the legitimate interests of pharmaceutical companies around the world.
China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products called on its member companies to be united, open and to seek new markets and innovations in foreign trade. Similarly, China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textiles called on the US to listen to the voices of industry and consumers and correct its decisions that harm all parties.
China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Light Industrial Products and Arts-Crafts called on the world's industrial partners to join forces against US trade pressure.
Critical comments were also made China Chamber of Commerce of Import and Export of Foodstuffs, Native Produce and Animal By-Products (CFNA)which called the US tariffs pure protectionism. In her view, the measures are damaging to Chinese businesses and global markets and bring no real benefit to the US economy.
Finally China Chamber of Commerce of Metals, Minerals & Chemicals Importers & Exporters (CCCMC) warned that the US move raises costs for importers, exacerbates inflation and increases the risk of a US recession. The chamber encouraged the Chinese government to take all necessary countermeasures and urged foreign partners, including U.S. companies, to oppose unilateral and harmful tariff practices.
All chambers agreed that trade wars have no winners and the call to stop them must be faced together.
