President Xi Jinping presented the Friendship Medal to Dilma Rousseff, president of the New Development Bank and former president of Brazil, on Sunday ahead of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
Xi Jinping, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, conferred the highest state decoration on foreigners at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The award is given to persons who have made outstanding contributions to China's modernization efforts, promoted exchanges and cooperation between China and the world, and safeguarded world peace.
Rousseff has attached great importance to Brazil-China relations and during her term in office she has pushed for Brazil to become the first Latin American and Caribbean country to establish a comprehensive strategic partnership with China.
