The China Media Group (CMG) on Friday unveiled the official theme and logo for the 2025 Spring Festival Gala, which will kick off the Year of the Snake according to the Chinese lunar calendar, falling at the end of January 2025.
The theme of this year's gala is "Year of the Serpent, keep a watchful spirit" ("巳巳如意,生不息"), which invites Chinese communities around the world to join the New Year's Eve celebrations.
The Chinese lunar calendar divides time into 60-year cycles and marks each year with 10 "Tiangan" characters and 12 "Dizhi" characters. For the Year of the Snake, which roughly corresponds to 2025, these characters are "乙巳".
The logo for the gala shows two "巳" characters placed side by side. The left character is upright, while the right is its inverted mirror image. This way of placing the characters corresponds to the traditional Chinese style, which resembles a pair of decorative ruyi objects. The ruyi is a decorative object widely used in China to express wishes for dreams to come true, which forms the first part of the main theme of the gala.
The second part is a well-established Chinese expression that means the endless cycle of life.
