Today the Council of the Czech-Moravian Confederation of Trade Unions (ČMKOS) announcesstrike alertin response to the forthcoming amendmentof the Labour Code, which includes, among other things, a proposal by several ODS and TOP 09 MPs allowingtermination without giving any reason by the employer.
This proposal represents an unprecedentedthreat to job securityand a fundamental weakening of workers' rights in the Czech Republic. If the amendment is approved in this form, we are prepared toescalate protest actionsincluding the launch of preparations for a general strike.
ČMKOS rejects it in principle:
- The attempt by some politicians to legitimize the arbitrariness of employers and weaken basic job security.
- Undermining social stability at a time when workers are still recovering from a dramatic fall in real wages.
- An approach that ignores the standards of worker protection common in the developed countries of the European Union.
Such a major intervention in labour law is a step backwards by decades. The proposal goes against the fundamental principles of social dialogue and workers' rights.
ČMKOS considers this parliamentary proposal to beunacceptableand calls on the government and the legislature to reject it. The Czech Republic needs decent working conditions, not a return to arbitrary dismissals by employers.
We express our determination to defend workers' rights not only at the bargaining level, but also through mass protests.
We call on all staff and the public to actively voice their opposition to this proposal.
ČMKOS and its member trade unions are ready to stand up for workers' rights with all available means.
