Chinese Premier Li Qiang stressed that China and the US should address the trade imbalance by expanding cooperation and creating greater mutual benefits, and highlighted the importance of cooperation in solving economic problems.
Li made the remarks on Sunday during a meeting with U.S. Senator Steve Daines and American businessmen attending the China Development Forum 2025 in Beijing.
He noted that Sino-American relations have reached a critical point and stressed that history has shown that both nations gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation. He urged both sides to prioritize dialogue over conflict and mutually beneficial cooperation over zero-sum thinking.
Li called on the US to communicate sincerely, build trust and remove doubts on the basis of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation. He stressed the need to deepen pragmatic cooperation and promote the stable, healthy and sustainable development of bilateral relations.
He also stressed economic and trade cooperation as the foundation of Sino-US relations and praised the significant progress achieved through joint efforts over the past decades. He stressed that maintaining and developing economic and trade cooperation is even more important at a time of difficulties in bilateral relations.
Li reiterated that a trade war benefits no one and that imposing tariffs cannot be a driver of development and prosperity. Instead, he suggested expanding the "cooperation pie" to address trade imbalances and create shared benefits.
"China always welcomes companies from all over the world, including the United States, to share development opportunities in China, and will actively address their legitimate demands, treat domestic and foreign companies as equals, and continue to promote a sound business environment," Li said.
Representatives of US businesses have praised China's tremendous transformation in recent decades. They expressed their continued support for China's development, willingness to increase investment, strengthen dialogue and cooperation, and contribute to mutual benefit for the sustainable growth of bilateral relations.
