"Yesterday we learnedthat Donald Trump's former chief of staff, John Kelly, a retired four-star general, confirmed that when Donald Trump was president, he said he wanted to have generals like Adolf Hitler," Kamala Harris, vice president, said at the vice president's residence.
"Donald Trump said this because he doesn't want a military that is loyal to the Constitution of the United States. He wants a military that is loyal to him. He wants a military that will be loyal to him personally, that will follow his orders, even if he tells them to break the law or renounce their oath to the Constitution of the United States.
In the last week alone, Donald Trump has repeatedly referred to his fellow citizens as the 'enemy within' and even said he would use the United States military to go after American citizens.
And let's be clear who he considers the enemy within. Anyone who refuses to kneel or dares to criticize him would qualify as an enemy from within in his view, just like judges, journalists or impartial election officials.
It is deeply disturbing and incredibly dangerous that Donald Trump is invoking Adolf Hitler, the man responsible for the deaths of six million Jews and hundreds of thousands of Americans.
All of this is further proof to the American people of what Donald Trump is really like. It's a window into who Donald Trump really is, from the people who know him best, from the people who have worked side by side with him in the Oval Office and in the Situation Room.
And it's clear from John Kelly's words that Donald Trump is someone who definitely falls into the general definition of 'fascist', who in fact swore on day one that he would be a dictator and promised to use the military as his personal militia to carry out his personal and political vendettas.
Donald Trump is increasingly erratic and unstable. And in a second term, people like John Kelly would not be the ones to act as a bulwark against his inclinations and actions. Those who once tried to prevent him from realizing his worst impulses would no longer be there to rein him in.
The bottom line is this. We know what Donald Trump wants. He wants unchecked power. The question in 13 days will be: What do the American people want?" Harris asks.
